It was a great set to use so long as you knew what you were doing. Coctails from breathing the proto mixing with seawater when the relief valves flipped really had a way of upsetting your day. It looked ancient but was the best self contained set i ever wore even as a commercial diver aftr leaving the Royal Navy.

I own 2 BioMarine rebreathers and a third for parts. I have converted them to commercial diving use in a closed circuit with gas reclaim and recompression back into cylinders for analysis and recycle into the system. I like the BioMarine stuff - I remember the Mark 16/16's, Rexnord, etc.
Good article

Waar mijn grootvader werkzaam in was.

Do you know if it is possible to get a free copy from the Gap software?

Janwillem,
this article is so much fun, especially the test at the end, and I now know that I am damaged. I knew you divers were crazy and now it is confirmed; it must be the gas! I recognized a Bird ruby orifice picture in your article right away. I am a design engineer working on a gas mixing problem for a special optics purge system for a semi-conductor inspection tool manufacturer in San Jose, California. I've been searching the web for some information on sonic flow thru orifices, and I found you! I am not a certified water diver, but I am a certified muff diver (Heidi would only testify under oath)(und waere ich gezwungen koennte ich es auf deutsch erklaeren!) Thanks for the fun, and the great article! Gregor

Just interested in the new technologies. I have been diving since 1958 and have logged over 3,000 hrs on compressed gases. Old enough to not be actively diving at present but do like to keep abreast of new technologies.
Deepest dive was 235' on tri-mix,oxygen, nitrogen, and helium, all manually controlled.
Very interesting site.

Hi Janwillem,
Tanks for your answer about the Russian KO2 rebreathers, I will try to send you more informations on these rebreathers, but let me the time to do the transslations from the Russian technical informations I can found.
I' m French collector of gas masks but had dive some time ago with Spirotechnique SCUBA equipment and start to dive in 1958/59 years.
Now I'm to old ( 70 years )to try to dive with O2 rebreathers, even less than 7 meters deep and don' t know wher to refill oxygen bottles and to find soda lime!
Best regards

Looks like you guys had a great trip......I loved the pics of the schooling baitfish, the spanish dancer, the small puffer (spiny boxfish) in the reef, the salps (that string of black dots in protoplasm)) and all the invertebrates.....
Working on two new (to me) units....one is very conventional...a real rip off of most of the commercial systems...the other is a system to give Dr. Bob heart burn...a rip off of his FEOR...next dive Hatteras Island in July....just a 4 hour drive from Raleigh...gotta wait till the water warms up...its a bit cold..I am such a wimp....
Lastly, my new and first grandson (6 weeks) had his first pool session on Sunday...6 total immersions if only briefly with no problem. He loves the water as does his mom, dad, grandad, and uncle....
Keep up the good work,
Tom Rose

I worked with BioMarine as a Fire Service Specialist in the early 1980's and man tested the original BioPak 240P during its development. I think closed circuit still solves many problems associated with SCBA in long duration applications. I would be happy to share my firefighting and training experience with closed circuit SCBA with anyone interested.
FYI: Our Master's in loss prevention and safety is available entirely online and we have students worldwide.

Very very informative. Have been poking around at different diving recently with cave and trimix. Next step is a rebreather course and then...to buy a rebreather. This site has been very useful for a complete novice to get an insight. Much is lost on me at the moment but to know there is a pool of info here is re-assuring and a great reference.
Thanks.

Many years ago I bought a rebreather (Desco Model A) from a frend. I used it for several years and later obtained a Desco model B. The full face mask was missing so I replaced it with a mouthpiece. I used these until it became harh to find Baralime. We then switched to open curcit scuba.
Rebreathers required more training and recognization of their limitations but they gave us a great dive.
I have been diving over 50 years and this site reminded me of the early days

Hello
You mention the American Navy used these units. I was in the Canadian Navy from '89-'92 and we also used these units for ship board firefighting. I found the only downfall was the "lungs" would collapse if you were hold the hose too close to your body. The units we used had a "bail you would lift up and you and a tab you would pull on the bottom of the cannister to "light the candle". I not quite clear on the order it was done.
Thanks
Jim Morrison

I worked on the Chemox at MSA in Pittsburgh, PA USA during 1952 - 1954. At that time we were concerned about the canister coming in contact with water and causing an explosion when used in a fire emergency. The firemen were hot happy to use the Chemox for that reason - they preferred the Scott AirPack (spelling?).
The rebreather for shipboard use was developed during the 1950's by MSA.

Hi, I'm a mechanichal designer and a very active tech diver since 1995, I've been building my rebreathers since 2001: O2, Nitrox pendulum, semi-closed and two version of a MCCR since 2004, they were made from parts of RGU to plumbing and hardware accesories. Been diving them in all type of conditions, cold water, no vis, caves and wrecks. The first year was tense, since I know what I'm doing...
They're funny too look at, each of them went into many transformation and various design, just for pleasure or to make them safer.
My goals was to have a unit that his freeze proof, with low drag in strong current, minimalist and cheap to build, with a perfect horizontal posture and finaly safe to use.

Great site with some excellent information on aftermarket devices to make your rebreather better & safer. Only one problem is that for some links, I am being redirected to a BT (the finance people) site & you can't use the "back" command to get back to where you were. This also happened to another site - rebreather.org.uk. Is this just me or are BT using some new form of sneaky advertising? I would not buy BT products or services based on this experience!

I am retired from the USN-UDT/SEAL/EOD community. While researching information on the CSA SR-100 ESCBA, I noted your photos of the Emerson, which I used in the 1960's for night sneak attacks on enemy shipping and inside harbors. As I recall, bouyancy control was always a problem, always having to use the bypass, and depth control was difficult. I recall one dive where I was below 60 feet before I noticed my depth gauge. Fortunately I did not experience an o2 hit. I have also used the USN OBA in a shipboard environment during firefighting. Good Site. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

I was able to modify my SCR Dräger Dolphin to MCCR thanks to yr site.
Here I found enough pictures and text and educational stuff and links to homebuilders in order to start.

If yr site was non-existend, I would never have suceeded !

Thanks and safe diving

Hello, Janwillem I was inquiring a week or two ago about Pirelli Rebreathers. I think that the one I have is very simular to the LS-901 ,but mine only has one tank on the bottom. Plus mine has the metal snorkel attached to the mask it has a Cork float valve on top of the snorkel that is Stamped Pirelli . I'll send you some pics as soon as I can I've been very busy the last few weeks . I noticed that that when I looked at your site a few weeks ago there was many pics of the Pirelli rebreathers . They were sent in by a lady in Argentina . But your site has been changed around and I can't fid those pics anymore ? are they still up there on your site somewhere ? I'm not too good at searching things out on the computer .Thanks Don

From Jacques Favreul son of commanding officer of French submarine Doris

netmarine.net july 2003 about submarine Doris Hope since this time you've
got information Therefore you can have a look to French site sous-mama.org
or send to me a mail and I'll give you more information On site uboat.net
in "History of Doris" I've told to the author duiker Ton van der Sluijs (who
discovered Doris'wreck) there are plenty of mistakes ! (I've met him before
in Den Helder and in Brest France last year and I know him well, very happy
with crews' relatives, he with his friend duiker Hans had discovered the
wreck in July 2003). Best friendly regards.
