The Diluent Air bottle was mounted because there was a need for escape apparatus from submarines at 50 meters depth. The compressed air as a diluent was used for the first inflation of the counterlung in case the rescue started with empty lungs. It seems that in 1911 is was already a well known fact at Draeger that oxygen should not be breathed pure at depth greater than 20 mtrs. This 1912 model was equipped with pressure reducing valve and dosisunit to create the first Draeger constant mass flow oxygen lifesaver.
